As promised, Aunt Jackie had Drew dressed and ready to go when I arrived home. I took a quick shower and spent a few extra minutes to doll myself up a tiny bit, and then I was ready.
Walking into the country club where Aunt Jackie already planned on meeting with Vicki, I felt apprehensive. I held onto Drew’s hand so he’d stay close, but Aunt Jackie spotted Vicki right away, and she waved us over.
As we approached the table, I counted the extra chairs surrounding Vicki. There were five, which meant we were still waiting for two more people… Vicki must have noticed my confusion and clarified, “Sit, please. I hope you don’t mind, but I invited my boys to join us.” She looked up at me, and I offered a bashful smile.
“Grace.” His voice was right behind me, soft, strong, and sexy, and it caused me to become a little light headed.
Looking over my shoulder, I tried to hide the fact that my insides melted at how beautiful he was with his dark blue jeans and his white logo polo shirt, his light-brown hair styled in thick spiky chunks, and eyes that all but smoldered.
His demeanor did an obvious change after hearing Drew squealing his name, AJ’s face lit with the brightest smile as he picked Drew up in his arms and hugged him tightly. Ruffling Drew’s hair, I heard him saying, “Hey, I missed you, buddy.”
Still, in AJ’s arms, Drew leaned back and grabbed both his cheeks, squashing them together giggling and telling him, “I missed you too, AJ.” Leaning to the side, Drew waved sheepishly, “Hi, Miss Vicki.”
Vicki’s face lit up. That’s where her sons got it from. “Hello, Drew.” They gave each other another quick hug, and AJ set him back down but held onto his hand. Hunching over, he gave his mother a kiss on her cheek.
“Hey, Mom, you look nice.” He complimented and then greeted Aunt Jackie warmly.
Taking our seats, I did my best to hide how awkward I felt. It was weird, though, I didn’t think AJ knew I passed his house last night, so why was he being weird. Maybe it was just the fact that we were two friends who had shared an intimate side with the other and didn’t want anyone picking up on it. Yeah, we’ll go with that.
“Where’s your brother? I thought he arrived with you?” Vicki asked AJ. She stared for a moment before she placed her hand on his forearm. “Oh my, you don’t look so good. Are you not feeling well?”
“I’m fine, Mom, long night, just tired that’s all.” He responded, refusing to meet her eyes. “RJ’s out front on a phone call. He said he’d be right in.” He took a sip from the water glass in front of him.
Sitting three chairs away from him at a diagonal, I groaned internally at his darting tongue touching the water before it slid down his throat. I needed to move my concentration elsewhere or this was going to be one long and embarrassing dinner.
